Algy opened his mouth to speak, although truth be told he had no idea of what he should say, but before any words could come out, there was another voice from the bedroom door. “Is Jane in trouble?”

It was Biggles, of course. He stood framed in the doorway, his expression unreadable.

Sebastian glanced up briefly at his father, and then stared back down at the floor. “She might be, yeah,” he mumbled. “Mom might be in trouble. She doesn’t say so, but I can see…” he trailed off.

“Where is she now?” asked Biggles.

Sebastian said nothing.

Algy exchanged a meaningful look with Biggles just as Biggles took a quick step into the room and again opened his mouth to speak.

Silence reigned for several minutes.

Biggles was the one who broke it. “Is she all right?”

Sebastian abruptly jerked to his feet and glared Biggles full in the face. “Why do you even care?” he demanded. “You abandoned her for thirteen years—you abandoned me for thirteen years—and now you suddenly want to help her? Why do you care where she is, and what happens to her? Just stay out of it!” And on that note, he pushed his way past Biggles, out of the bedroom, and then out of the flat, slamming the front door behind him as he left.

Biggles gave Algy a helpless look.

Algy shrugged. “Awkward age,” he said.

“You going after him?” inquired Algy, after a brief pause.

“Would there be any point in it?” replied Biggles heavily. “He clearly doesn’t want anything to do with me, even though he was the one who came here to find me in the first place.”

Algy stared at Biggles for a minute, then snatched up a pillow from the bed and tossed it at Biggles’ face. “Go after him, you idiot!” he said.

“But what on earth am I supposed to say to him?”

“I don’t know! Do I look like a parenting expert?”

Biggles gave Algy a long look before turning to go after Sebastian. “No,” he said, with grim humor. “You don’t.”

The phone began ringing just as the front door closed behind Biggles. Ginger answered it, spoke briefly, and then turned to Algy. “It’s Raymond.”

“Biggles—” began Algy, but Ginger shook his head in reply.

“It’s not for Biggles. He wants to speak to you.”

Algy frowned, but said nothing more as he walked over and retrieved the instrument from Ginger’s hands. “Hello, sir. This is Lacey.”

“Ah, Lacey. Just the man I wanted to speak to.” It might have been Algy’s imagination, but Raymond sounded rather uncomfortable. “Tell me, how well do you know a Jane Bigglesworth?”

  1. Oooh, this is veerry interesting indeed. And why does Raymond need to speak to Algy about it? What's going to happen to Biggles? Has she come back to mess up his life again? Jane's secret life catching up with her? Can't wait for the next chapter, Soppy.

  5. Definitely an update worth waiting for, Soppy :D
Raymond's sounding a bit uncomfortable. What has Jane been up to now? Hope Biggles is able to start building some sort of decent relationship with poor Sebastian. Fancy being brought up by Jane? Poor kid!

  6. Oh, and just thought I'd add, to make it perfectly clear, BIGGLES is the one I'm wanting to speak to...then Algy, of course :))

  7. It's always better to speak to Algy on the phone. I see Algy as the person who is nice and patient on the phone, while Biggles is the one who gets impatient and irritated. (Algy, of course, has had much more experience of answering the phone, due to all the times Biggles left him behind to do so).

Poor Sebastian. I wonder what he must think of his parents. And his various uncles. (Personally, I would give anything for Algy to be MY uncle...)
