Caught between two fires, Algy did the only sensible thing that he could have done under the circumstances: he flung himself into the driver’s seat of the car in front of him and started the engine.

He saw Biggles take cover behind another car across the street as he began to drive away. A quick look over his shoulder showed Brechovich staring after the car, an expression of fury twisting his features as he raised his gun.

Algy ducked and swore as a bullet grazed the side mirror just outside his window. “Dash it, that was close!” he gasped to himself. Another bullet hitting the top left corner of the windshield made him wince. Was that Biggles shooting at him?

“What’s happening?” piped an eager voice from behind him, and in his astonishment Algy nearly drove the car into a tree.

“Where on earth did you come from?” he demanded wrathfully, as he turned in his seat to see a rumpled looking Sebastian lying across the back seat of the car.

“I was with Dad and then he rushed off somewhere so I called Uncle Ginger and then got into the back of this car.”

“You did what?” Algy swerved wildly as another bullet cracked into the side mirror, this one smashing the mirror to pieces. “And why did you get into this car in the first place?”

“I thought I might see my Mom,” said Sebastian simply. “Is someone shooting at us?”

“Yes,” said Algy grimly. “Your Dad.”

If this statement startled Sebastian, he did not show it. “Is he really?” he asked, kneeling up on the seat and turning around for a look.

“Keep your head down, you fool!” snapped Algy, and not a second too soon, for the next bullet slammed into the rear windshield of the car and smashed it to smithereens.

Sebastian was so shocked that he fell onto the floor of the car with an indignant grunt. He picked himself up and untangled his limbs. “What was that?” he gasped.

“A bullet,” replied Algy grimly. “Keep your head down; there may be more.”

“Who’s that man with the other gun?” inquired Sebastian, daring a glance over his shoulder.

“Your mother’s”—Algy stopped himself just in time, as he remembered who he was talking to—“friend,” he finished.

“Why’s Dad shooting at us?” demanded Sebastian, of no one in particular. “Do you think he’s upset about you kissing Mom?”

Algy nearly drove the car into another tree. “What? How did you know—”

“We saw you,” said Sebastian, placidly, with the calm boredom of youth. “Why did you kiss her? Do you like her?”

“Absolutely not!” declared Algy, barely suppressing a shudder. “You probably won’t believe me, but she was the one who kissed me.”

Sebastian made a face. “Why would she kiss you?” he asked. “She’s married to Dad.”

“That’s what I’ve been asking myself,” admitted Algy, refraining from mentioning that Jane had happily been kissing Brechovich without any signs of remorse. He noticed suddenly that the hail of bullets seemed to have stopped. Nervously, he chanced a glance over his shoulder.

  1. Phew!!!!!! I am glad Algy is temporarily safe - and Sebastian too.

Although Algy now has Sebastian on his hands, it does seems that Algy is actually quite good with Sebastian… Maybe… maybe, Algy should take over the father-role from Biggles...

  2. Relaxing slightly now. Sebastian will update Algy who's safe, but you've left Biggles in the vicinity of Jane which is not good. Mmmmm...

  3. I wouldn't be too sure about any temporary safety... There's bound to be a dangerous confrontation, and although these bullets missed, I'm not sure about the next round... :(

Anyway, I just love this bit: “Your mother’s”—Algy stopped himself just in time, as he remembered who he was talking to—“friend,” he finished.

Poooor Algy! Can he ever relax?

Dear Soppy, have mercy on us and put us out of this suspense, a.k.a. take Algy out of danger! *_*

  4. Phew, indeed! It's good to have a breathing space, but AA is right, I fear. Algy is far from out of the woods yet. Wherever he goes Biggles will find him (he knows ALL of his haunts) and with only Jane at hand now to give HER version of events to an already hopping-mad Biggles - things really don't look too good for Algy :(

  5. I' m rather glad I've read Chapters 19 -22 in one go. Like Kismet I've had to have a lie down. Soppy, what on earth are you doing to the poor boy? (Algy that is.). I really think it's time Biggles had a crack on the head to bring him to his senses. And what I have to say about Jane could not possibly be printed here. By the way, anyone want to bet Algy's got a huge punk lipstick mark?

  6. Someone hand him a wet-wipe quick! (We can't have Algy going about with the mark of the Peril in Pink smeared all over his face. It might give Jane ideas.)

  7. I think Algy probably wiped it off with the back of his hand the way most boys do when their aunts or someone kisses them and leaves lipstick!

Chapter 23 up tomorrow, hopefully. Look out for fireworks!

Not sure if anyone's still reading this, though...*sad*

  8. Of course someone's still reading this!!!
Can't wait to find out what happens to Algy and Co.

    Chapter 23 - Hooray! (Though maybe I won't be saying that after I've read it :( )
Fireworks eh, sounds a bit ominous...*gnawing nails anxiously*
