Biggles stood beside his plane, reading a list that the Air Commodore had given him. Jane stood next to him, her expression one of utter misery. Biggles wondered where the others were. “Probably finishing breakfast,” he thought, smiling. Absently, he reached for a cigarette.

“James!” Jane’s voice exploded in his ear. “How many times do I have to tell you not to smoke? It’s a disgusting habit, and it’ll be the death of you. What is there about cigarette smoke that makes men think it’s nice?”

“Sorry, Jane,” Biggles muttered, sounding like a contrite schoolboy. “I-”

“When will you break that silly habit?” she demanded. “Where did you pick it up, anyway?”

“In France, I expect.”

“War is hard on one’s nerves, Mrs. Bigglesworth,” Air Commodore Raymond commented, as he came up to them.

Jane glared at her husband, who hastily replaced the offending object back into his silver cigarette case. Without a word, Jane took the case from him and stowed it away in her handbag.

Biggles jumped out of his mosquito, holding a hand out to Jane. Algy and Ginger got out of the other mosquito, and Bertie emerged from the single-seater.

“Well, here we are,” observed Biggles, glancing anxiously at the sky, whose dark color promised bad weather. “It looks like it’s going to rain.”

Algy also looked at the sky, without enthusiasm. “Yes,” he agreed. “What do you think? You want to go now, or wait?”

“I think I’d better see this chap as soon as possible,” returned Biggles, “but there’s no need for all of us to get wet. I’ll take Algy. The rest of you can go to that hotel Raymond mentioned--I forget the name, but it’s in that pile of notes he gave me.”

“Right you are, chief.” Ginger took the folder Biggles held out to him.

“And what,” Jane’s cold voice rang out, “am I supposed to do?”

The four airmen turned to her, surprised.

“Oh, you go back to the hotel with Bertie and Ginger, Jane dear.” Biggles’ mind was on other matters, and he spoke absently.

“Why? Do you think I’m afraid of getting wet?”

“Well, no, but-”

“That’s settled, then. I’m coming,” decided his wife.

“Now, look here, Jane-” Biggles began to protest.

Jane silenced him with a glance. “I can’t go on a mission without knowing anything about it, can I? Besides, it is our honeymoon, in case you've forgotten.”

Biggles stared at her. “All right,” he sighed, after a pause. “Come on.”

The car Raymond had hired for them was waiting at the edge of the aerodrome and Biggles helped Jane into it before climbing in. Algy took the passenger’s seat without a word.

Ginger stared after them, speechless.

“Come on, old warrior.” Bertie’s voice brought him back to reality. “Let's get along before we get wet, eh?”

  1. I should think the sooner the poor chap gets a divorce the better. A henpecked, not-in-control Biggles... How could he have been so foolish.

Did you ever write where and how they met and what caused him do something so utterly stupid as to marry her?

You would really have thought Algy would have had more sense than to let him....

  2. I didn't really ask where and when Biggles and Jane met.

You'll be pleased to hear that it gets worse as the story goes on. One is left to wonder why Jane ever decided to marry him in the first place, since she finds fault with just about everything he does...

  3. Even Algy knows better than to stand in the way of true love....

Or, well, some sort of emotion anyway...

  4. Or worse still, why did Biggles decide to marry her when she finds fault with everything he does?? I can just imagine the expressions on the chaps' faces as the story goes along! :P
But I think she has just committed an unpardonable sin, with the taking away of the cigarettes...

  5. No doubt Biggles will find some way to get more ciggies...

  6. Well, any sympathy I might have felt for Jane has just gone! He pecking him I front ofmthenothers, not understanding what it is that actually makes Biggles tick....and taking away his ciggies!!!!!! Why on earth has Biggles married her? After all, he's had my heart since I was 12.......

  7. Men tend to find women who are bad for them. Look at Biggles and Marie. Then look at Biggles and Jane...

  8. And no doubt he will find some way to smoke somehow--get ciggies from Algy perhaps.

  9. I should think that is the very least Algy could do, having allowed him to marry her...

  10. Who said Algy had a say in any of this? When Biggles really wants to do something, no one can stop him.
